The History of Tartan
One of the earliest records of Highland tartan is from 1538 AD with a purchase made by King James V, but the weaving method has been a part of Celtic history since 5 or 6 B.C. Although Scottish tartans were prominent in the Highlands, other communities had their own weaver who designed a tartan pattern that was used in all the garments made for local residents. county tartans became popular, and it was easy to tell where someone was from based on the weave and colors of his garment. Scottish clan tartans for families within a county were later developed.
